AC and DC refer to the kind of electricity: Alternating Current and Direct Current

for welding DC(+) is used to direct the heat from the Rod, to the piece being worked. the (negative) clamp is on the workpiece and the (positive) rod strikes an arc. electrons flow toward the rod and heat it….

alternatinc current (AC) is used for primarily for shielded welding where there is also a flow of inert gas surrounding the wire or rod. this keeps out any oxygen which may damage the workpiece or oxidise the weld if it made of Aluminum, Stainless steel , Titanium or Magnesium.

you can alter the AC to direct more heat to either the workpiece or the rod. this makes for very clean welds that require no sanding or filing.
