you do have to appreciate the concentration that goes into playing baseball, particularly when 4000 flashbulbs are going nutso at the same time.

Derek Jeter Trivia!
So all you baseball fans have seen the very famous play made my Derek Jeter in Game 3, 2001 ALDS. (The backhand flip to Posada in foul territory on the first base side to tag out the runner at home plate). Anyway, my question is why was he there in the first place? Isn’t it the pitcher’s job to back up a throw to home plate, not the shortstop?

Jeter was in front of home plate and, like you said, the pitcher backs up the plate. Jeter has the uncanny ability to see the entire field and improvised. It’s not like he abandoned an important position on the field to make that play.
