When Sherman marched across Georgia to the sea they stole and/or destroyed everything they thought was eatable except the black-eyed peas and hog jowl. They thought no body ate them. The south lived on them for a while. There was also a tradition started about that time that if you cooked a silver dollar in the pot that for every pea you ate you would get a dollar during the next year. So are you going to cook a silver dollar in your pot? Better wish for a thousand or more for each pea!
