George Lucas! On the way to Star Wars premiere in Berlin.

The Beginning
George Lucas

In May of 1973 George Lucas wrote a 10-page hand-written treatment called The Star Wars. In 1974, he finished writing a rough draft, but it was too long and too expensive to film, so he essentially cut it in half, combining many of the most exciting parts. He would eventually write four complete drafts before filming began in March of 1976. In 1977, following the incredible success of Star Wars, Lucas announced that he would make two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, which came out in 1980, and Return Of The Jedi, which was released in 1983. Having completed the trilogy, Lucas put any future Star Wars film on hold. Finally, in 1993, after seeing ILM’s digital effects work on Jurassic Park, Lucas decided to enhance the first three films, creating the Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition. With the success of those films in theatres worldwide and having always wanted to create prequels to the earlier trilogy, all of which had their beginnings in the notes and early drafts he’d written for the first film, Lucas embarked on Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace (1999), Episode II Attack Of The Clones (2002) and Episode III Revenge Of The Sith (2005).
