I had a look at a couple of the usual top 10 albums of 2010 published by supposedly achingly cool magazines, and frankly I was shocked.
Bland, boring, predictable…
Nothing original, edgy, revolutionary.
Of course we have Simon Cowell and X Factor to thank for homogenising our music into banal, over produced pap.
He’s is obviously a brilliant businessman, but music and business don’t mix. Music is an art – so leave it alone.
In 1977 when I was a very young teenager, I didn’t dye my hair, wear bondage trousers and tee shirts made from safety pins to join the punk revolution so that in the 21st century Cowell could send Britain back 50 years musically.
I didn’t form bands with names like Atrocity Exhibition, Zenith and Black Death; and write songs that relied on three very over-used chords, so that the high-waisted one could bring in a new era of over produced, synthesised muzak; headed by pretty boys and pretty girls looking for their 15 minutes of fame.
When I was in bands we couldn’t really play, but we created our own music and we entertained, and it was all live. None of us were handsome, but we played music with passion and we got girls who were frankly way too pretty for us, because we were in a band.
I was once proud of British music. A country that produced The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Punishment of Luxury, The Smiths, Killing Joke……
New bands like them are prevented from surfacing because X Factor is on every weekend at prime time, and the fickle teenagers and tweenies want nothing more than to buy into their favourite pretty person who can sing karaoke, rather than a genuine musician who can actually play an instrument and sing at the same time.
When I saw the top 10 albums of 2010 on a news web site, there were loads of comments contradicting it, and one said ‘this is rubbish, the album of 2010 is John Grant’s Queen of Denmark’.
I thought I’d check it out as I hadn’t heard of him, and it turns out it is sublime. He has such a fantastic baritone voice, and his backing band Midlake really add to the excellence of the album.
Listen to this album I beg you. Ok, it is not exactly Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division, or Disintegration by The Cure; but it is a very accomplished piece of work, and as Grant has had quite a chequered life, you can tell he has suffered for his art.
Listen to it….. It won’t change your life, no music can actually do that, but it will make you feel very very good.
